After last weeks washout, skipper Matt Bristow took his Colney side on the road to Southgate Adelaide, looking for a change in fortune, but again went down to defeat, albeit after a much more convincing batting performance. After losing the toss and being invited to bat first by the home side, Colney were initially set back by losing the skipper to a run out early on. Phil McLaughlin (41) and Matt Newland (47) put the game very much back in Colney’s favour with a 95 run partnership for the second wicket, taking them past the 100 mark in the 25th over. Then after the fall of three quick wickets wickets, Ady Fisher joined Tony Holloway in the 31st over, and the pair added an unbroken 117, to see Colney through to 230-4 at the close, with Holloway unbeaten on 71 and Fisher on 41. Crucially, however, King, Watts and Morris between them sent down the last 32 overs of the inning at less than 4 an over, and the run rate for the second half of the innings was exactly the same as the rate for the first half, and from being in a position where they might have been out of sight, Colney had to defend a total that looked gettable.

Adelaide got away to a sound start with the top three, Lyte (45), Irish (49) and Kenna (46) all making contributions. Although Simon and Tim Fretter both bowled economical spells in the middle of the innings, only when David Goff returned for a second spell did Colney start to pick up wickets, and by then the home side were closing in. Goffy finished with 3-64, and there was wicket each at the end for Matt Bristow and Paul Wise, but Bristow’s off spin was costly, and Adelaide were able to score quickly enough in the closing overs to get home with three balls to spare. On reflection, Colney will be starting to feel that in this division, and with the bowling attack they have at their disposal, aiming to get past 200 isn’t enough, and they probably have to be looking at 250 plus to be winning games batting first.
