Match report
London Colney vs Bishops Stortford II
Herts league Division 3, Saturday May 26th
At London Colney
Bishops Stortford II 273.2, 7 overs
London Colney 79 all out, 21 overs
In the corresponding fixture of last season, London Colney had beaten Bishops Stortford II to clinch promotion off the last ball of the season. That result was never going to be repeated, though, as the visitors inflicted one of Colney’s heaviest ever defeats in league cricket. Going in with a team stricken by poor availability, and seeing Bishops Stortford II win the toss and elect to bat, skipper Matt Bristow opted to try and get some overs out of the 2nd XI bowlers he had at the start of the inning. Matt Irvine (1-26 from 13) and Paul Wise (1-75 from 14) both bowled reasonable spells, but no significant inroads into the Bishops Stortford II batting order were made, and crucially, opener Chapman was never really troubled and accumulated runs at an increasing rate. Moreover by the time the two regular first XI bowlers, Scott Hadley and the skipper himself got the ball, steady drizzle had made effective bowling difficult. Chapman batted superbly, with scarcely a false shot, and when the visitors put Colney out of their misery declaring at 273-2 in the 47th over, he stood on 170 not out with a double century beckoning, which as events unfolded, they could easily have let him have.
Colney were by now thoroughly dispirited, and never mounted a semblance of a challenge, particularly to the penetrative seam bowling of Aussie Carfield. From the moment he struck in the third over Colney’s batsmen had no answer, and backed up by Barret (2-17) he rattled through the Colney order finishing on 6-30. Until some late shots by Tom Blackman (15), only Tony Holloway (14) reached double figures, and fittingly Chapman himself took the last wicket, to leave Colney beaten by the better part of 200 runs. This may not be the last time Colney are hit by poor availability this season and the skipper urgently needs to identify some different bowling options.
