Another disappointing batting performance on Saturday left London Colney still looking for their first win of the season as they failed to chase a fairly modest total posted by visitors Letchworth II. After winning the toss and deciding to field first, Colney skipper Matt Bristow saw his bowlers generally on top after Letchworth opener Simmons hit an early 61. There were 20 odds from Elliot, Dean and Hislop on the top 5, but by the time Colney got through to the tail, Letchworth didn’t have much to offer, and they struggled to 201-9 at the close. The skipper was the pick of the bowlers with 3-47, and there were two wickets each for Uzman Zaman and Paul Wise, and not for the first time this season, Colney looked to have given themselves a decent chance of a win.
Once again, however, Colney’s top order simply failed to function, against a bowling attack that they should have been able to cope with. By the halfway mark they had slipped to 79-6, with Only Ady Fisher (21) getting into double figures. The win looked long gone, and another disaster seemed on the cards. That didn’t happen, thanks to a fighting 70 not out from Tony Holloway, and an unbeaten 24 from Adam Stuart ensured that Colney denied fellow strugglers Letchworth the points. With a winless Colney now occupying bottom place in the table, they will need to find a win soon, if they aren’t to return to Division 4 after just a single season.
