London Colney Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Hatfield Crusaders on Sat 02 Jun 2007 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn 139-7 chasing 168
In division 7 the seconds failed to win for the first time this season, but will take satisfaction from holding their own against a good Hatfield Crusaders side, in a tough competitive match at the Green St ground. Winning the toss the visitors elected to bat, and got away to a flyer as opener Amit Singh piled into anything loose from the first ball, hitting a rapid 52. With his bowling options limited by availability, skipper Paul Seymour had no option but to ask for extended spells from his veteran pair of Den Hadley and Ady Bristow, who sent down 40 overs between them. Singh and opening partner Horden (45) took the score to 95 for the first wicket, but by then Hadley and Bristow had got the run rate under control, and the game turned when Bristow frustrated Singh into a charge down the wicket, to give Jerry Fretter a smart stumping, and then Hadley picked up Hardens wicket to a catch behind. From then on it was all Colney, as Crusaders tumbled to 168 all out in the 48th over, with Hadley taking 5-46 from 16 and Bristow 4-66 from 24, and Paul Hadley grabbing the other with a superb direct hit run out.
On a low slow pitch and an outfield that made boundaries a rarity, this was a lot more than it looked, especially as Crusaders bowled and fielded as well as any side Colney have seen this year. Adam Buckmaster (29) and Bill Freeman (23) were made to graft as Shaikh and Starry sent down 24 overs with the old ball at less than 2 an over. Alex McCartney, batting at three, looked every inch a match winner, and when the new ball was taken, the run rate increased, and for a while Colney looked likely winners, but the game changed in the 43rd over when Vatich struck with a hat trick, to reduce Colney from 109-3 to 109-6. Colney re-grouped, the required rate climbed rapidly, and when a seventh wicket fell, Colney called off the chase, finishing on 139-7 and McCartney undefeated on 50, to earn a creditable draw against a very good side.
