London Colney Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Broxbourne II on Sat 21 Jul 2007 at 1.30pm
London Colney Cricket Club Lost Lost by 4 wickets after posting 161-6 in a rain-shortened first innings
Despite a fighting performance with bat and ball, the II’s weren’t able to do quite enough to overcome a solid looking Broxbourne II, at home in a rain-affected division 7 match. Winning the toss, Colney skipper opted to bat, betting against the promised showers shortening the first innings. It soon became clear that Broxbourne were a useful bowling side, and Colney had to work to keep wickets in hand for a late charge. Bill Freeman held the innings together, riding early luck, to score 61 not out, and he was supported by a fighting 30 from Mitch Bradley. The pivotal point of the innings came when, having played through early rain, the players were forced off with just 5 overs to go. Despite agreeing an early tea, no more than 5 more balls were possible in the first innings, and, deprived of the late charge, Colney finished on 161-6, with Broxbourne left 43 overs to get them in.
Colney gave it a good shot, with Trevor Ray and Ady Bristow removing the openers cheaply. Broxbourne skipper Wilkins (28) and Downes (45) built a slowly accelerating 60 run third wicket partnership before Den Hadley (3-36) and Matt Irvine (1-36) hit back, and at 119-6, any result looked possible. Hardy, batting at 7, however, with nothing to lose, hit a rapid, unbeaten 48 to give the visitors the win the final over. Colney were left reflecting that they had stood toe to toe with of the divisions better sides, and had the rain break not arrived at the worse possible time, might have produced a different result.
