London Colney Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Met Police Bushey I on Sat 18 Aug 2007 at 1.00pm
Match was Abandoned Rain - Match Drawn

An O-So-Near result against a team that haven't been beaten in three years.

Colney were probably denied victory after rain ruined what looked a good run chase.

Colney had restricted the formidable Police batting to just 179, which could have been much better had catches been taken.

In reply, Bill Freeman and Mitch Bradley looked in no trouble as they set off in response, reaching 42-0 when the forecast of rain came true and prevented any further play.

The Police team, known for playing in the rain, were very quick to leave the field, as I suspect they knew a defeat was looking likely.

Due to the lack of over received by Colney, both teams took 10pts each, which in reflection could have been so much more.

And below, here's the report that went to the press:

At home the second XI entertained the unbeaten league leaders Met Police Bushey, and will take great pride in putting up a terrific fight before the game was abandoned. Colney skipper Paul Seymour, winning the toss and mindful of the weather forecast, decided to control the game by bowling first, and saw his bowlers produce one of the performances of the season against the league leaders. Matt Irvine, bowling with pace and aggression not often seen in division 7, put the openers on the back foot, and supported by young Dinal Kadawathage kept Met Police to under 2 an over. Ady Bristow, conceding just 15 off 8 overs, removed the dangerous looking opener, Thomeson (30), , but the pick of the bowlers was Paul Wise, who in two spells claimed 4-41, breaking the 60 run partnership between Turnbull (63) and Murphy (20) which had threatened to turn the game back to the visitors. In the end, Met Police were forced to settle for 179-6.

Mitch Bradley (25*) and Bill Freeman (15*) opened up Colney’s innings in gathering gloom, in what was the crucial phase of the game. Quick wickets would have seen MPB pushing for the win regardless of the weather, but instead the Colney pair put on an unbroken 42 without looking in too much bother. With 30 overs still bowl, and Colney needing just 138 with all wickets intact, in good weather they would have looked the more likely winners, but by this time it had been raining for 10 overs, the ball and outfield were wet, and any kind of result was looking increasingly unlikely, and both teams agreed to abandon the game before the 26 over threshold cost them points.
