London Colney vs Hemel Hempstead II
July 5th, Division 3
At London Colney
Hemel Hempstead 211-7
London Colney 192 all out
Hemel Hempstead won by 19 runs
One of the worst weekends of the season for availability had left London Colney up against it going into their home division 3 match against Hemel Hempstead II, and stand in skipper Scott Hadley, after winning the toss, felt his only chance of a win was to bat second and chase. In fact, his limited attack made a pretty good job of containing the visiting batsmen. Last week’s hero Uzman Zaman bowled unchanged throughout the innings and claimed 4-76 from 27 overs, and Tim Fretter backed him up with 2-61 from 16. Crucially however, Colney didn’t have much to call on in the way of change bowling, and when Clark (42) and West (76) started to consolidate Hemel Hempstead’s innings with a third wicket partnership, they were able to take 73 runs from the 10 overs sent down by the change bowlers. In the end, the fact that Zaman was able to bowl half the innings overs at less than 3 an over meant that the visitors had to settle for a relatively modest total of 211-3, at the close, which Colney would probably have settled for at the start.
The story of Colney’s reply was essentially one of not getting the start they would have needed from the top 5. Opener Paul Wise stuck around to make a gritty 37, but by the time he was out, with the score on 74, four wickets had gone down, including a needless run out. The middle order made a brave attempt to bring the game back to Colney with runs from Tony Holloway (22) Scott Hadley (55) and Tim Fretter (27), but were never able to quite overcome the bad start, and as wickets fell the tail was exposed. Freebrey, at second change for Hemel Hempstead was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4-35, and there were two each for Lynch and Hutcheon, who wrapped up the tail to leave Colney all out on 192, 19 runs short of their target.
