London Colney Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Little Berko Sahibs I on Sat 03 May 2008 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn LCCC 8 pts LBS 5 pts

Well, the 2008 Division 7 season was underway. After a week of heavy rain the outfield was a little moist in places, but the wicket was firm, if a little slow. Capt Seymour needed to win the toss, but early season form deserted him. He did say that he had been practicing his toss over the winter !! He lost the toss and was asked to bat by the Little Berko skipper.

Paul 'Monty' Wise, fresh from a university 50, opened up with John Jenkins. The appearance of ducks on the outfield may have distracted him, when he was bowled for 0. Adam 'Inchy' Stuart followed soon after, in an identical manner, for just 3. John Jenkins was run out following hesitation in calling. Jerry Fretter and Connor Dow slowly attempted to steady the ship and a stand of 34 was forthcoming, before Fretter was bowled for 11. Colney were 55 for 3 and a big score looked unlikely.

A notable moment came when Andy Stirrat strode to the wicket and promptly scored his first runs for 3 years !!

Connor departed soon after, having made a rather pleasant 22, when he was bowled. Stilts was trapped in front for just 7 and Capt Seymour also fell, after a flowing cover drive.

John Gibbons held the tail together for a patient 18, while Den Hadley went for 9, Paul Hadley 1, leaving Mike Newland (Snr) on 9no. Colney had mustered only 103 in 50 overs, which looked a little under par.

After a fine tea, Connor Dow opened up with fine pace, coupled with good line and length, which bodes well for the rest of the season. With Mike Newland's good line and length, the Berko batsman could not get away. With just 8 runs from the first six overs, something had to give, and Newland's nagging line was too good, bowler the opener, Marett (3). Den Hadley replaced Connor after his compulsory 5 over (0-7), and didn't waste the good start.

The Colney players remembered the big hitting from the Berko No.3 from 2007 and did not want him to get away. Both Newland and Hadley kept it tight and Newland was again rewarded when Fretter smartly stumped Green for just 13. Den followed a few overs later, when Fretter stumped Awan (12). Berko had stuttered to 62 for 4, which soon became 69 for 6 when Paul Wise came into the attack. Berko had 50 overs and only needed 2 an over, which should have been possible, especially with Tom Carr (27) still at the wicket.

However, the returning Dow and Wise accounted for Carr and Colney now had a sniff of not only a draw, but a win !!

Gibbons was introduced in a gamble to take the final wickets, and although he accounted for Bowers (1), who was caught by a surprised Capt Seymour at mid-off, Colney could not finish it off.

With the final over requiring two wickets, and both batsmen, by their own admission being non-cricketers, Den needed to bowl straight. Colney were not going to lose, but had the chance of the full 30 point.

Sadly, in the 17th Over, Den's radar seemed to have switched off and Berko held out for the draw.

Colney took 8 points and Berko 5 points, in a game played in the true spirit of cricket.

It was evident that Colney had come into the match a little 'under-cooked', with most of the team having their first run out of the season, but hopefully an improvement in conditions and availability will see the side take a few wins.
