London Colney Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Flamstead on Sun 04 May 2008 at 2.00pm
London Colney Cricket Club Won by 213 Runs

Match report The Sunday 1st XI opened up the season with what looks like an impressive and crushing 213 run win against Flamstead. On paper, that was the result.

With late call-up's for Ade 'Oates' Fisher and Gerry Hanna, the side looked fairly strong.

The signs of a close game were not good when Flamstead turned up with just 8 players !!!

Capt Cock 'won' the toss and batted, which was probably, in hindsight, a good call.

Fisher was asked to open, with Wise, but declined. It was left to Uzman Zaman to partner Wise. However, it was not to last, as Zaman failed to move his feet and was bowled for just 2.

McCartney looked solid, until he went for a big shot - right shot, poor execution - and departed for 9.

Both will consider a chance missed for batting time and runs.

Tim Fretter and Paul Wise made the most of 6 fielders and some gentle bowling. Tim sped past Wisey and brought up a rapid 50. He looked on for a big, big score, and could even have threatened the high club score.

After a stand of 136 (just 10 runs short of the highest 4th wicket partnership - Fisher/Holloway) Tim went big to the wrong ball and was bowled for 90. Wisey kept going and the sight of him and Simon 'Slug' Fretter having to run singles and two's was a joy to watch.

Slug was run out, when Wisey failed to respond to an easy single. Slug unselfishly, gave his wicket away to allow Wisey to look for a ton.

Gerry Hanna didn't last long and kept the ducks happy.

With three overs left, Wisey had 94, and the sight of J Fretter coming to the wicket should have meant easy singles.

Wisey managed to get to 98 with one ball left. He smashed the ball to mid-on, to see the fielder just put a foot on it. All afternoon it would have missed him for an easy two.. not this time.

Wisey was off for two anyway. Jerry Fretter managed his two, but sadly Wisey then suffered for a second time when the fielder made a direct hit... Wisey, run out on 99 !!!

Colney had amassed 241/7 from 45 overs which was always far too many for 8 Flamstead batsmen.

Uzman opened up and took two wickets and was removed. Slug took the other end and was unlucky not to take wickets. He was not to be denied, when he bowled a 'Jaffa' which moved off the seam and hit off stump.

Both were removed to try to get a game. Uzman was replaced by brother Farouk. Despite some good swing, he was not able to find the right line. However, he was not to be denied, when his best ball took out middle stump.

Slug was replaced by Gerry Hanna, who managed to increase the Flamstead score with wides and no balls, but on-the-whole, bowled reasonably well. Even Gerry didn't go unrewarded when a 'long-hop' was hit towards Merv Irvine. Somehow, even though he looked like Bambi, he managed to secure the ball in one hand.

Farouk was replaced by Alex McCartney and he didn't go unrewarded either. Some late in-swing was always threatening, but it was his straight on ball, which took the edge, and was taken at the wicket by Jerry Fretter.

Gerry Hanna was replaced by Tim Fretter with his left arm 'chinaman'. Despite a couple of warm-up balls to get the arm coming over, he finally put the Flamstead team out of their misery, when he accepted a simple caught and bowled.

Flamstead had been shot out for just 28, with 12 extras (7 wides,2NB,2LB,1B) making a large part of the score. A win of 213 runs, and every bowler taking a wicket.

Many thanks to Ade Fisher... for doing nothing... Merv at least got a catch, and he did put the Tea out.....

Not the best game of cricket, but some miles in the legs, time at crease and overs bowled, which should help in the coming weeks.
